Ed's Notes: In the cases of Red Tornado and Firestorm, I feel like the the weaker versions prior to them becoming Elementals would make for perfectly fine PC's.  While the fully powered Swamp Thing would probably still be right on the border of NPC only range, THIS version just seems way to one-dimension and boring to play. So I don't really see using it in anything other than a flashback or 'Episode One' type scenario. If there was any elemental that could serve as a PC the fully powered Swamp Thing is it. Forget about this version. Lol.

First Appearance: Swamp Thing #1 (November, 1972)

  1. A superstrong, regenerative, intelligent vegetable scientist who has to be creative in communications seems boring to you? We have very different definitions for the word...

This is actually the version I would allow in my campaign for a PC. The power level is reasonable, whereas the fully powered elemental one is just way beyond the levels worth playing, but I tend to run more at Titans or Infinity Inc. levels than at Superman or JSA levels.

But in any event, the character is great. Never forget! :)

    1. Perhaps I was hasty in my original comments. ;)
You bring some very good points. To be honest, I have to admit that "scientist" is a skill that I don't utilize nearly enough in my campaigns. And you are completely correct: the elemental versions are generally WAAAY overpowered. I like Firestorm and Red Tornado a lot as charecters in their pre-elemental forms. I guess I just look at how this version of ST would fit into campaigns I've previously run and I just see "slow, punching, tank." BUT... I am honest enough with myself to admit that this may say more about my campaigns than this charecter. Lol

    2. Ha, fair enough. I suppose it also depends on what kind of genre you're running, and how many players you have. Swamp Thing tends to work best in a more comedic or horror setting, since you lose a lot of what can be great about the character in a straight four-color campaign with multiple flashy supers.
