Bonuses: Radio Communications can transmit video as well as audio information.
Limitations: Cling only works on mental surfaces; Regeneration will not work if current Body is below 5 AP's. In such a case, he must be repaired as though he were a Gadget.
Advantages: Connection: Doom Patrol (High), Teen Titans (High)
Drawbacks: Miscellaneous: Seems to have a problem keeping his metal body intact. Any time he receives 10 or more RAPs of damage from a single blow, roll on the following table:
Result
1-2 Arm knocked off
3-4 Leg knocked off
5 Head knocked off
6-10 No effect
For each arm knocked off, Dex and Str are reduced by 2 APs. If one leg is knocked off, can only move/Run at a rate of 2 APs. If both legs are knocked off, can no longer move at all. If head is knocked off, he immediately drops unconscious. Whenever any limb is removed, he must be repaired as though he were a Gadget in order to recover.
Alter Ego: Clifford Steele
Motivation: Unwanted Power
Occupation: Adventurer, Race Car Driver
Wealth: 8
Source: adapted from 1st Edition Doom Patrol Sourcebook, pages 9-10
Affiliation(s): Doom Patrol
Ed's Notes: Even including Cyborg, Cliff Steele might be the closest thing DC has to Marvel's Thing (Ben Grimm.) That whole Drawback was in the notes potion, underneath his entry, in the DP Sourcebook. Since 1st Edition didn't really have "Drawbacks" I just moved it up. I also converted his "Chest Camera" to the newer "Radio Communications" Power, with the Visual Bonus.

Well, yes, Cliff was Ben. The Doom Patrol was one of several 'FF-equivalent' groups created by various comic companies back in the day. Other examples: The Elementals by one of the major independents (I knew the guy who drew that), and two Marvel supervillain teams (Red Ghost and his apes and a later one whose name escapes me), both of which were conscious efforts to recreate the cosmic accident that created the FF.
ReplyDeleteIn the original Doom Patrol ElastiGirl was an actress like Sue Storm, who had stretching powers like Reed Richards. The guy who created the Doom Patrol had Reed's brains/inventiveness while being trapped in a wheelchair like Charles Xavier (his successor The Chief/Daystrom was eventually an even closer analogue of Xavier). The Negative Man could fly like Johnny Storm and had energy powers like Storm, but electrical/contact instead of heat/projection. And The Doom Patrol had all of the Marvel-trademarked angst and bad luck that was absent in most DC comics*.
* = There were exceptions, like the Metal Men, Metamorpho, and the somewhat later Deadman.
